This week's rain has been a welcome sight for Connecticut lawns and gardens β but it also created ideal conditions for mosquitoes across the shoreline and central Connecticut.
β It Only Takes a Bottle Cap of Water
Here's the part many homeowners don't realize: mosquitoes don't need a pond or a swamp to breed. They can lay eggs in as little as a bottle cap of standing water. Flowerpot saucers, children's toys, buckets, clogged gutters, tarps, bird baths, wheelbarrows β even the folds of outdoor furniture covers β can become mosquito nurseries after a heavy rain. (CDC)
β From Puddle to Biting Adult in Under a Week
With the warm temperatures and humidity we're seeing right now, mosquito development happens fast. (EPA)
Egg to biting adult in as little as 4β7 days.
That means the standing water left behind by this week's storms could be producing the next generation of mosquitoes before next weekend.

β The 10-Minute Walk That Makes the Biggest Difference
The good news? A few minutes can prevent hundreds of mosquitoes from ever taking flight. After the rain stops, take a walk around your property and:
- Empty buckets, toys, wheelbarrows, and watering cans
- Dump and refresh bird baths every few days
- Remove water from flowerpot saucers
- Clear clogged gutters
- Tighten screens on rain barrels
- Turn over kiddie pools and containers when not in use
- Check tarps, grill covers, and outdoor furniture for pockets of collected water
Mosquitoes typically stay close to where they hatch. Eliminating breeding sites around your own home is one of the most effective ways to reduce mosquito pressure right where your family spends time outdoors. (CDC)

Your Treatment + Your Walk = Maximum Protection
If you're a Mosquito Joe client, your barrier treatment is already working to knock down adult mosquitoes and protect your yard between visits. Eliminating standing water is the perfect complement β the treatment handles the mosquitoes that are here, and your 10-minute walk stops the next generation before it starts. Together, they're far more effective than either one alone.
